Main Purpose

  • To analyze large data set as a team

  • To gain an overarching view of your research

  • To organize and group information into meaningful categories

  • To identify painpoints, trends, and etc.

Conduct when

  • Group consensus is necessary

  • You need to analyze verbal data (Eg: survey or interview responses)

  • You need reduce attributes to categories that can be addressed at a higher level

  • You want to develop a relationship or theme among existing ideas

  • You want to organize large data sets

General Steps 

  1. Record individual ideas/ insights that you want to sort into categories. 1 per post-it note.

  2. Examine the ideas/ insights with your team. Group related content together and create new groups when ideas do not fit into an existing cluster.

  3. Name each group to discover possible themes.

  4. Discuss insights, possible connections between clusters, and gaps yet to be addressed. 

  5. Regroup the content if necessary.
