Braving Through Remote Work

ginger-cat-759.png

A technique used in user-centered interaction design to evaluate a product by testing it on users.

Design Process

  • Empathise

  • Define

  • Ideate

  • Prototype & Reiterate

  • Test

Main Purpose

  • To evaluate users' understanding on design

  • To gather feedback about design

  • To improve design

Conduct when

  • During the early stage of prototyping

  • You want to know how users perceive your design

  • You want to test the effectiveness of your design

General Steps

  1. Plan the session

  2. Set up the tools and recruit participants

  3. Be available to attend to participants' questions (even if it is unmoderated)

  4. Recruit more participants

  5. Analyse results

Variations in User Testing Methods

Remote + Moderated:

  1. Phone Interviews

    • Moderator verbally instructs participants to complete tasks & collects feedback

    • Economical way to test users in wide geographical area

    • Time-saving

  2. Card Sorting
    • Place concepts on virtual note cards & allow participants to manipulate the cards into categories
    • Participants to explain logic in a moderator-run debrief session
    • Great for getting feedback about layout and navigational structure
  3. Think-Aloud Protocol
    • Ask the participant to use the product continuously while thinking
      out loud

Remote + Unmoderated:

  1. Session Recording

    • Use software to record the actions participants take on a site/web

  2. Problem Discovery
    • Give the participant different tasks and see how long he takes to
      complete the tasks
    • Find the common problem/assumption
  3. Online Testing Tools and Platforms
    • 5 Second Test
      • Upload/show participant a photo/screenshot of prototype with a single question and participants have to answer within 5 seconds
      • Easy way to collect large amount of qualitative data about
        first impression
    • Unmoderated Card Sorting
      • Skip the debrief session afterwards
      • Faster and less expensive than moderated card sorting
      • Participants can do it at their own convenience
    • First Click
      • Ask the participant a question and see how he navigates
        (what’s his first click)
      • Useful for collecting data on user experience and determining prime location for buttons and menus
